New Excellent Training for reVision Volunteers
reVision has developed an excellent new seminar for our volunteers, which we are excited about. You can sign up now to participate in Racial Dynamics & the Work of reVision, which will be held on
March 4th | 7 pm at reVision headquarters
May 7 | 7 pm at Strawbridge United Methodist Church in Kingwood
September 17 | 7 pm at reVision headquarters
November 4 | 7 pm location to be determined
The seminar will take a look at how racial dynamics impact the way we see, respond, and love people – particularly the youth and their families who make up our community. Your involvement and evaluation will add constructive value to this effort.
Here is what we hope you will walk away with:
An overview of the history of race and whiteness in the United States,
An understanding of the difference between individual and systemic racism,
An understanding of the terms "white privilege" and "whiteness" and why these terms matter, and
Deeper awareness of how racial dynamics impacts reVision’s work.
Dr. Rachel Schneider will be our facilitator. Rachel holds a PhD in Religion from Rice University and currently serves as the Associate Director of Project Curate. Her research has focused on how progressive white Christians engage with past and present issues and practices of racial justice.
The handful of volunteers who participated in the pilot evaluated the seminar with a 4.6 on a scale of 1-5 for overall satisfaction, excellency of content, and helpfulness to their work as reVision volunteers. Said one participant, “I could have a conversation on this subject without feeling guilty or angry.” Another person commented, “The discussion questions were provocative without being alienating.”
We believe this seminar is vitally important to our work with reVision youth. Our goal is to make it available to every reVision volunteer by offering it four times in 2019. If you can’t make the March 4th seminar, you can register for one that fits your schedule and location. Please follow this link to register for the March 4th or one of the alternative dates.
Thank you for the difference you continue to make in the lives of reVision youth!
